Breakfast at Grand Central Market: What Opens Early and What We'd Order (2026 Update)
Most people think of Grand Central Market as a lunch spot, but the market opens at 8 AM every day, and that first hour is the best time to be there. We did a full breakfast crawl on a Sunday morning: coffee, Eggslut, a lox and egg bagel, a $5 taco the size of a burrito, candy for later, and a ride on Angels Flight across the street. We filmed it in February 2022 and checked every stall again in October 2026. Most of it is still there. Wexler's Deli, where we got the bagel, is not.
How to do breakfast at Grand Central Market.
Get there at 8
The market opens at 8 AM every day. We got there early and the place was nearly empty, so even the Eggslut line, usually the longest in the building, took us about 15 minutes. By the time we were eating tacos, it was crowded.
Start with coffee
The coffee bar on the Hill Street side opens at 8 too. When we went it was called G&B Coffee. It's now Go Get Em Tiger, the same owners' first location, with pastries and beans to take home.
Where to sit
Grab any open table inside and share plates from different stalls. On a nice morning, the patio with red umbrellas on the Hill Street side is the better seat.
Finish on Angels Flight
Walk out the Hill Street side and ride the funicular up Bunker Hill. We paid $1 each way in 2022. It's now $1.50, or $0.75 with a Metro TAP card loaded with stored value.
What we ate for breakfast at Grand Central Market.
Still at the market.
We'd order all of these again.
Eggslut: the Slut
Open 8 AM to 2 PMCoddled egg over potato puree, in a jar
What to get: The Slut, and mix it before you spread it.
An egg cooked on top of pureed potatoes in a glass jar, with toasted baguette slices on the side. You stir it together and spread it on the bread. It's messy, and it's one of those breakfasts we keep coming back to: savory, soft, and a lot of different textures in one bite. Eggslut closes at 2 PM, so it's a morning stop.
Eggslut: buttermilk biscuit with honey butter
Limited itemBiscuit
What to get: Get it if it's on the menu that day.
It was a limited item when we went. We expected the honey butter to be really sweet, and it wasn't: it's smooth, creamy, and buttery. The biscuit was flaky without being too crunchy. It took a little effort to spread, but it was one of our favorite bites of the morning.
Tacos Tumbras a Tomas: carne asada taco
$5 in 2022Tacos, burritos, tortas
What to get: One carne asada taco to share. It's enough for two.
We asked what was most popular and the answer was everything, so we picked asada. The taco came out so stuffed we couldn't tell if it was a taco or a burrito. The meat was tender and well seasoned, and it was a lot of food for $5. Tacos for breakfast doesn't get more LA than this. The family-run stall has been at the market for over 50 years and is open 8 AM to 9 PM.
Go Get Em Tiger (formerly G&B Coffee)
Open 8 AM to 5 PMCoffee bar
What to get: An iced coffee, with oat milk if you like it creamy.
This has been our go-to coffee in the market for years. We got an iced coffee with oat milk and a plain one. You order at the wraparound counter and can sit right there with a pastry. It opened in 2013 as G&B, and the market now lists it as Go Get Em Tiger's first location.
La Huerta Candy
Opens 8 AMCandy, dried fruit, nuts
What to get: Fill a bag for the drive home.
Not breakfast, but we stopped anyway. It's walls of bins: American candy, Mexican nuts, and dried fruit. The market says the gummies with chamoy and chili lime are what people come for. It closes at 6 PM Sunday through Wednesday and 9 PM Thursday through Saturday.
Closed since our visit.
Here's what we had, so you know what changed.
Wexler's Deli: lox and egg bagel
No longer at the marketBagel and eggs
What to get: You can't get this one here anymore.
This was the bagel of Lisa's dreams: perfectly crispy, with salmon that wasn't too salty and super bouncy eggs. Wexler's is no longer on the market's vendor list, and its website now lists only a Las Vegas counter at ARIA. For eggs at the market today, Eggslut and Jose Chiquito both open at 8.
