Soup 'N Fresh in Rancho Cucamonga: Is the Souplantation Successor Worth the Drive?
When Souplantation closed for good in 2020, a lot of us lost a childhood staple. Soup 'N Fresh in Rancho Cucamonga brought the whole thing back: the salad line, the soups, the blueberry muffins, even the same dining-room layout. We drove 45 minutes from the SGV, got in line an hour before opening, and ate our way through it to see if the nostalgia holds up.
Where we ate.
Soup 'N Fresh
8966 Foothill Blvd, Rancho CucamongaAll-you-can-eat salad bar, soups, and bakery
Get: Build a salad, then go straight for the soups: the chicken noodle, the clam chowder, and the smoky corn chowder. Save room for the blueberry muffins, and grab a garlic bread to dip.
It tastes exactly like the old Souplantation. Same salad line, same multicolored bowls, same layout. The chicken noodle soup is made in house, and it ran a little salty the day we went (our server said they can adjust it). The clam chowder is a real step up from canned, with lots of potato and a bit of clam, and the corn chowder is smoky, creamy, and corny. The star for us was the blueberry muffin: moist inside, crisp on the outside, and packed with blueberries. The garlic bread isn't very garlicky, but it goes well with the soups. Is it amazing food? Not really. You're paying for the nostalgic experience, and for us it was worth it. And one change we're glad about: nobody needs to call a restaurant a plantation anymore.
Good to know before you go
- Get there early. We showed up an hour before the 10:30 AM opening and were 10th in line. Come at 10 and the line wraps around the building. Opening time is also when everything is freshest.
- We paid $43 for the two of us in early 2024. Prices have gone up since then, so check current lunch and dinner prices before you go.
- The salad bar has the classics: three-bean salad, pasta salads, beets, garbanzos, raisins, egg, pickles, and jalapeños. Dressings include ranch, thousand island, and Italian. We didn't see oil and vinegar. The bacon bits are vegetarian.
- Vegetarians do well here. The corn chowder and plenty of the salad bar are meat-free.
- There's lots of seating, and the service was excellent. Drinks are Pepsi products plus a couple of very sweet juices.
